Managing China's mental firewall - Isaac Mao

Isaac Mao

Chinabiz Speaker Isaac Mao gave the feature its name: the mental firewall. While free-speech advocates focus on technology to make the Chinese internet censorship obsolete, the Chinese internet users in general cannot be bothered.
Mao is quoted today extensively in the Wall Street Journal.
"It's tricky, because self-censorship has helped to protect people," says Mr. Mao. But he adds that these self-imposed restrictions are stifling expression and, in the long run, his society's development.
